Try to use diskpart utility (type diskpart in windows cmd) both appear to be operating without issues ( and i have filled these up without errors, best i can tell ). i currently have a pair of SATA drives active in my system on Win 2k ( 250g and 160g ). i also usually will split drives into partitions no larger than 128G in order to avoid the FAT32 limits for certain disk operations. be sure your motherboards support large drive 48 bit LBA as necessary. i've done this successfully for drives up to 250G. the format util will not report the correct drive size due to a bug in the way the size is calculated and displayed, but this only affects what gets displayed. The FDISK util will partition the drive FAT32, and the FORMAT util will happily format the entire drive. use the FDISK and FORMAT utilities from Windows ME ( last OS to run under DOS ). create a DOS boot floppy to use for prepping a drive. i use windows 2000 SP4 as the primary OS. I have been searching for a free partition tool now I don't need one. After answering a few confirmation questions, Windows will start to format your large disk to FAT32 no special program needed. Substitute drive parameter with the drive letter of the drive you want to format into a FAT32 volume. All you have to do is open up the command prompt and issue the following command: Unknown to almost everyone, the command-line FORMAT.EXE utility, installed with every copy of Windows operating system, will be more than happy to help you format your drive to FAT32. The FAT32 option will not show up under "File system" in the "Format Local Drive" dialog as shown in the screen shot below.Īccording to Microsoft, many tasks on a very large FAT32 file system become slow and inefficient. Really, I'd prefer a windows-dependency-free way of formatting my new external to love and cherish for the forseeable future.Format Large Disks to FAT32 on Windows XP and Vista I never intend to use MITTEN with any windows machine, and I am aware of other linux-only formatting (EXT4? i think).
I've gone through using Swissknife to format it as FAT32, and even renamed the drive "MITTEN" but my Ubuntu is treating it as read-only and I can't change any permissions. I have access to a room mate's laptop with vista. I look forward to being able to fix it all myself one day. My intention is to use the external to back everything up, update to some new beautiful Ubuntu in the 10 or 11 range, then mess with finding some compatible USB wifi key. I am currently running 7.04 and have been very tardy about updating it.
I have just received a Western Digital 1TB external. After much searching and seeming (green bean?) inability to post my own threads this is the most related post to the problem I am having.
